Silver Rose leads her littermates back to camp. Soaring Eagle saved Red Willow's and River Stone's lives, but not before the ice had broken. She'd had to drag them out of the water, and both are soaking wet and freezing cold.

Soaring Eagle marches back into Camp with the Cubs trailing behind her. "Just WAIT until I tell your mother about this!" she mutters. Falcon Talons and Shadow Forest rush up to her with Lightning Spark and Sweeping Wind trailing behind. "Soaring Eagle!" they exclaim. "I'll meet you in the Cub Den," she tells them. "First I need to talk to Fading Mist about something." She glances at the dripping cubs. "It won't take long."

Fading Mist pokes her head out of the cub den. She knows immediately that something's wrong when she sees Soaring Eagle's unhappy expression. Then, she sees her cubs, and Red Willow and River Stone. She darts forward and begins to lap at their watery pelts, trying to get out the water. She looks up at Soaring Eagle, braces herself, and asks, "What happened to my cubs?"

"Two of them fell in the river, and the other two led them there." says Soaring Eagle. "Do with them as you wish."

Rolianthus Eromata returns to the forest to grab a quick meal of young buck and enlists the helpp of a nearby friend wolf to help her drag back another large male moose for her friends in the Cub Dens, a family who just got their father returned to them and who needed some time to catch up on lost time.

Fading Mist yelps in surprise. "They fell in the river?!" She rounds on her cubs, and snarls, "You four are to stay in camp. Do you understand?" The cubs all duck their heads, and mutter, "Yeah." They the follow Fading Mist to the Healer's Den to get warmed up.

Fading Mist leads her cubs to the Cub Den, then glares down at them. "What were you doing by the river?" she snaps. "I've been worried out of my fur!" Silver Rose looks up and opens her mouth to explain, and whimpers, "It's my fault. We wanted to catch prey." "And we did!" Red Willow adds triumphantly. "We caught four rabbits!" Fading Mist silences her daughter with a growl, but is secretly impressed with how bold her daughter is. "We'll never do it again," promises Lapping Wave. "The Great Balance of right and wrong showed me it was right, but I saw incorrectly, and I now know it was wrong." The other cubs shoot Lapping Wave a funny look. "What Great Balance?" asks River Stone, puzzled. "You know," says Lapping Wave. "The Great Balance. Can't you see the scales? They're right in front of you, all the time." " What?" yelps Fading Mist. "You can't see them, can you?" Lapping Wave mutters numbly. "Why can't you see them? They're hovering right in front of you!" "No wolf can see your scales!" snorts Red Willow. "I don't understand!" wails Lapping Wave. "Why can't any wolf see them, but I can?!"

Like a ghost Cheveyo stalks the female white tail. Not wishing any wolves to find her prey she gives chase. In a few massive bounds Cheveyo's gigantic bulk collides and drives the deer to the ground. With a satisfied snarl she clamps her powerful scared jaws on the deer's neck. With the deer finished the black wolf prepares to eat her meal, a lone as always. Before she has time to ripe a chunks of flesh from the doe another wolf emerges from the woods. With a feral snarl Cheveyo spins around and prepares for the attack ,no willing to give up her hard earned meal. Being a loner she does not know the handsome wolf.

Silver Rose grips the throat of a bison calf. Pleasure fills her as the taste of blood warms her mouth. She turns to see Falcon Talons walking into the clearing. Now's time to make my move, she thinks, as the handsome young black and white wolf turns his head to her. "Nice catch," he comments. The sweetness of his voice, like a vanilla flower, makes Silver Rose go numb. His eyes speak the truth. Silver Rose smiles, or tries to, but Falcon Talons's sweet, small smile makes hers come out as a silly looking grin. She opens her mouth to sweetly say 'thank you', but instead blurts out, "Do you want to share with me?" Falcon Talons looks surprised, before settling down beside Silver Rose. "Thanks," he says softly. Silver Rose shrugs. "No problem." Falcon Talons nods, and Silver Rose laughs says, "I'd get a belly ache if I tried to eat the whole thing alone!" Falcon Talons grins. "I'm not that good at hunting," he admits, taking a bite. Silver Rose flicks a piece of bison flesh at him. "Yeah you are," she argues. Falcon Talons catches the flesh and gulps it down. "No, I'm not. Not like you are anyways." He shoots Silver Rose a look of admiration. Silver Rose feels her ears grow warm, and says modestly, "This was just luck." "No it wasn't," Falcon Talons insists. "I watched you catch this. You killed it spot on!" Silver Rose's ears blush crimson. "Have you heard about the Xarindas stealing our territory?" she asks, desperate to change the subject. "Yes," Falcon Talons growls smoothly. He leaps up and sinks his claws into the bison. "This is what I'll do to them!" Viciously, he tears into the bison. Silver Rose stares. Then she gets to her paws. She crouches down, and snarls, "And this is what I'll do to them!" She leaps, fangs bared, and lands her forepaws squarely on Falcon's shoulders. She shoves his side with her hind paws, sending him toppling over. She pins him down, her fangs bared in his face, before she realizes what she's doing, and that it's not an enemy wolf that she's attacking, but her (hopefully more than) friend. Falcon Talons looks stunned. (Like this: ) Horrified, Silver Rose stumbles off him. "S-sorry," she squeaks. Great! Now I've ruined everything! He'll never like me! Falcon Talons shakily gets to his paws. "Wow," he whispers. "You're a good fighter!" "Sorry," Silver Rose repeats. Falcon Talons shrugs. "I'll know not to get in a fight with you!" he jokes. Silver Rose nods sadly Then, both young wolves burst out laughing.

Lapping Wave smiles from her hiding spot in the heather, happy for her sister. The scales tilt to right. "I'm happy for you, Rose," she whispers. "Falcon Talons suits you well. Hopefully, he'll accept you as a mate."

River Stone shrugs from behind a tree. "No biggie," he tells himself. "So what if my sister and best friend might end up together." Inside, conflicting emotions arise within him. On one paw, he's happy for his friend and sister, but on the other, he knows his life will never be the same, and that neither Falcon Talons nor Silver Rose won't have time to hunt and play fight with him like they used to.

From inside the furze, Red Willow sighs in grim defeat. Her sister found a male wolf before her. "I'll best you, Rose," she silently vows. "I'll find the best male. Strong, brave, and handsome, just like Falcon, except better!" Then she finally takes the time to feel happy for her sister.
