Fading Mist opens her eyes to find herself in the healer's den. She can't move without hurting her ribs, but bears the pain wincing. She sees several wolves surrounding her, and to her horror, Lightning Strike is amongst them! She crawls to her mate's side, and examines his wounds. He has several very deep claw wounds, a broken rib, and to her horror, his jaw was locked in place by three pieces of bark! The bark was bound by vines, wrapping them together around Lightning Strike's jaw. Her mate opens his eyes, and smiles faintly when he sees her. "You're a mess!" he whimpers through gritted teeth.
"What's happened to your jaw?" breathes Fading Mist, licking his cheek.
Lightning Strike winces, and says, "That stupid bear hit it with one of its great swipes, and apparently broke it." He pauses, and seeing the look of horror on his mate's face, he quickly adds, "Apple Leaf says I'm lucky! He says that if the bear had hit my head, it would have broken my skull and killed me."
"Will your jaw heal?" asks Fading Mist. Lightning Strike rolls off his back and onto his belly, raises his head, and replies, "Apple Leaf says that if I keep the bind on, my jaw will heal perfectly straight."
Suddenly, Apple Leaf bustles into the den looking flustered. Purple juniper berry juice splatters his red pelt, and upon seeing Fading Mist and Lightning Strike, he drops his bundle of herbs, and ambles over to the two wolves. "Lightning Strike!" he snaps angrily. "Your supposed to be on your back if you want your jaw to heal properly! Well, actually, I was about to dress your claw wounds, and then onto your back!" Lightning Strike ducks his head apologetically, as the healer hurries back to his herbs. It takes an age for him to dress Lightning Strike's claw wounds, and when he does, Lightning Strike obediently rolls over onto his back. Apple Leaf turns to Fading Mist, and spits, "You! Get into your nest!" His breath reeks of juniper berries, his eyes are wild, and his ears are pulled back. "You bear the worst injuries in here! You're in no condition to be up!"
Fading Mist angrily crawls back into her nest, and painfully settles down. "Wow," she thinks. "There are so many injured wolves! I saw the bear even kill one!" Then, her thoughts flutter off in a different direction, and she wonders, "What of my cubs? Are they injured? Who's taking care of them?" still pondering on this thought, she closes her eyes, and falls asleep.
