Lapping Wave trots furiously out of the Cub Den. Why couldn't they see the scales? Right now, they are tilting to Right. The scales her gold and shiny but wrong had a pile of bison bones drenched in loner stink, and right smelled of her family. But why? Why could she see them?! Lapping Wave sits down in an empty den, and sobs. The den smells of Soaring Eagle, but the scent is stale. This must be the alpha den. Still Lapping Wave looks up to see the scales telling her it is right that she is there. Her ears fall down, and she continues to weep in sorrow and frustration. Tears stream down her face and soak her white fur, but she doesn't mind. Of all wolves, why her? Her sobs stop abruptly, as her ears prick in alarm. She sniffs the air, and anxiously looks at the scales, but they still tilt to right. She resists the fighting urge to run, because she doesn't want the scales to tilt to wrong, but she's terrified on the inside that something was in that den with her. Suddenly, she hears paw steps behind her, and she whirls around to see Soaring Eagle standing behind her. Eagle doesn't look or smell angry. Just curious. Then she asks, "And what exactly, Lapping Wave, are you doing in here?"

"Umm..." says Lapping Wave. "That is an excellent question."

"I can see these scales telling me what's right and what's wrong," she explains. "But no one else can see them! I don't know why! They're right there, hovering in front of every wolf's face!"

Soaring Eagle looks shocked. "What color are they?" she asks immidiatley. "Huh?" asks Lapping Wave. "What color are they?" "I dunno... gold?" Soaring Eagle sighs in relief. "Good. You appear to be able to see Lupus'es scales of right and wrong."

"WHAT?!" Lapping Wave almost shrieks. "Why? Why can I see them?"

"You're special I suppose," replied Soaring Eagle. "All wolves who are destined to be great can see them." "Really?" asks Lapping Wave. "Yes. You're just lucky they weren't black."

Lapping Wave feels excitement rising in her heart. She was never special before! Silver Rose is a natural leader and is almost identical to her mother. Red Willow is the only red wolf in the pack, and Rivier Stone is the strongest. "What would happen if they were black? Has any other living wolf seen them? What can I do with them? Can I help the pack with them?" she bombards Soaring Eagle with questions.

"Calm down!" laughs Soaring Eagle. "I can also see the scales, although Sky Deamon cannot. You can easily see what is wrong and what is right, and you can help the Pack make choices. If the scales were black, well, I would have to tell you a story to explain that..." "But I want to hear it!" exclaims Lapping Wave. "Okay, fine." says Soaring Eagle.

"What's the story?" demands Lapping Wave. "I want to hear it! I want to hear the story! PLEASE?"

"Fine," says Soaring Eagle. "Long ago, when Lupus lived among wolves, the world was perfect. All wolves were good and kind, and the founders of each Pack were alive and well. This went on for many years, until Canis came. Canis was an evil wolf, who lived off of the bloodshed of others. He twisted the hearts of good wolves, causing Loners and disputes between the Packs, and eventually killing the Xarinda leader, Intu Xarinda. This made Lupus very mad indeed, and she took the wolves that were still good, and waged war on those who were corrupted. The war was long and brutal, but eventually Canis and Lupus killed each other. The two were made immortal for their great deeds, and given the ability to walk among the stars and bend the wills of others, so each created a set of scales that leaned towards right and wrong, that only great wolves could see. Lupus'es scale was gold, and always told the truth, but Canis'es scale was black, and only told lies. To this day, only wolves destined to be great can see the scales, and the color of the scales coordinates with what they will be."
